If you are a serious Beatles fan, this book is a must. It is long (about 800 pages) but does a tremendous job covering the band from their ancestors to the end of 1962, when they were poised to take the world by the storm. In fact, the length of the book and the level of detail was a welcome surprise as I could not get enough of it. I have read quite a bit about the Beatles and I must say that it is by far the best of them all. You get to know a lot about their backgrounds, their coming together, the music that they loved, listened to, and played, and a lot of personal details that all gel into a gripping narrative. I could not tear myself away from this book (it interfered with my functioning and my work to a certain extent :)). It is obvious that Mark Lewisohn loves the Beatles and is a huge fan himself. At the same time, he does not hold his punches when necessary. For example, he is honest about Paul's behavior toward Stu or John's overall "spiky" personality (I will not say more so as not to drop spoilers). He calls a spade a spade while also loving his subjects dearly.One note on the two versions of this book: I got the "regular" version. I also had a chance to see the "extended" (2-book) edition. To me, the regular edition was more than enough. It had all the information and presented it in a tight narrative. The extended version has a lot of unnecessary detail about Beatle ancestors, the British music business, and other less related topics, and in general did not add enough interesting narrative to warrant the hefty price tag. In the extended edition, you get the same story line but with additional detail, much of which is really tangential to the Beatles story. I would recommend the standard, one-book version of "Tune In."I can't wait for Mark Lewisohn to finish the second volume! Overall, a monumental work and a gripping read.
